The basis of the operation of all laser based equipment at ISTA is the legal compliance document for works with lasers

Laser hazards may be controlled by the use of dedicated laboratories to Laser controlled Areas, engineered controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment, either singly or in combination. As a general rule, engineered controls are preferred where appreciable hazards exist, although these may need to be supplemented by the use of protective eye wear.

 

Room requirements for Laser controlled Areas and Laboratories
  • laser warning sign at the entrance door(s)
  • laser warning light at the entrance door(s)
  • laser proof curtains to separate laser setups in the same room
  • additional laser warning light for compartments if several laser setups are operated in the same room
  • covered windows and doors (if door has a glas window) with laser proof material
  • access control with offline locks
  • emergency electricity stop for laser controlled areas housing lasers with open light paths
Engineering controls

Lasers require certain built-in safety features dependent on their classification. These additional safety measures incorporated into the design of the laser system may include:

  • Protective housings
  • Remote interlocks
  • Access panels
  • Emergency master switches
  • Enclosed or semi-enclosed beam paths
Administrative Controls
  • Prior usage of a newly purchased laser, the setup needs to be registered and approved by a laser safety officer
  • Safe Working Procedures
  • laser safety training is mandatory for all laser users
  • Record Keeping – any changes in location or usage of lasers need to be reported to the laser safety officer
  • Correct Labeling of Devices
Personal Protective Equipement (PPE)

The main form of PPE is protective eye wear, but in the case of class 4 lasers should also include protective clothing and footwear.
